Speakers: Dan Karasic, MD, Geoffrey Reed. PhD, Peggy T. Cohen-Kettenis, PhD, Richard Krueger, MD, Gail Knudson, MD, Kelley Winters, PhD

ICD 11 promises dramatic changes in diagnosis, including removal of Transsexualism from the mental disorders section, and a narrowing of the paraphilic disorders. The new sustainable theory of investing

Speakers: Jay Youngdahl, East Bay Express and Harvard Fellow at the Institute for Responsible Investment; (Responder) Ed Church, Institute for Environmental Entrepreneurship

Wall Street investment activity is premised on a view of a theory of finance called, “Modern Portfolio Theory” (MPT). Due to lack of an alternative, even many green investment companies rely on MPT. But MPT is based on a selfish view of utilitarian interests in which the investments of an individual or enterprise are looked at out of societal context, and measured only by short term financial returns. Strict adherence to MPT forecloses most sustainable and green investment strategies and MPT has failed even as to what it promises. Hear from a panel working on a new replacement theory that is fascinating as well as nationally important, and which puts sustainability and people’s true needs at the heart of investment strategies.

Policy Institute – Transgender Health Coverage

Speakers: André Wilson, MS; Jamison Green, PhD; Cecilia Chung; Susanne Watson, PhD

Challenges and work-arounds in implementation. We will discuss the continuing barriers to access reported by healthcare providers and patients alike both in inclusive plans and those with exclusions: challenges in prior authorization and claims processing, limited provider networks, and outdated insurer medical guidelines. We will provide information on documentation, procedure and diagnosis codes so providers can minimize denials and succeed with billing and appeals, and discuss strategies for direct advocacy with insurers. We will continue with an overview of progress towards inclusion, best practices and indispensable advocacy tools such as the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Equality Indexes (MEI, CEI) and professional association interventions. Comparing progress towards trans*-inclusive benefits in the healthcare industry with other professional sectors. The role healthcare providers can play in eliminating exclusions in their own sector. Outdated medical policies currently used by most insurers remain a central barrier. We will discuss our draft “Model Guideline” and issues posed by utilization management systems. We will also look at the progress made by the Healthy San Francisco program, and by Kaiser Permanente.

Psychoanalysis in the Community Symposium: United States Armed Forces Most Lethal Combatant: Self or Other: Veteran Suicides in the US

Speakers: Chair & Discussant: Jeffrey Taxman, M.D. (Mequon, WI) Presenter: Doc King (Topanga, CA) Discussants: Harold Kudler, M.D. (Washington, DC) R. Dennis Shelby, Ph.D., L.C.S.W. (Charleston, IN)

Only recently has our country begun to appreciate the shocking number of US veteran suicides...22 every day! This symposium will explore veteran suicidality spanning multiple generations and foreign conflicts. Before this session participants are invited to attend a screening of the remarkable movie “Project 22” which poignantly shows the human faces of this tragic mental health issue. (See pages 29 and 65 for more information) The symposium panel includes ‘Doc’ King, one of the creators and directors of this documentary. As a combat veteran he has dealt first-hand with this personal, painful issue. Dr. Harold Kudler—VA Chief Consultant for Mental Health Services—and Dr. Dennis Shelby will discuss the psychological issues raised by the movie, what is being done to address this problem nationally, and what we as analysts can do about it in our practices.
