Just How Smart is Our Growth? Getting Ready for a Maturing America

Speakers: Rebecca Hunter, MEd, Institute on Aging and CDC-Healthy Aging Research Network, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Chris Kochtitzky, MSP, Associate Director for Program Development, Division of Emergency and Environmental Health Services, Center for Disease Control and Prevention; Mary A. Leary, PhD, Senior Director, Easter Seals Project ACTION, National Center on Senior Transportation & Other Transportation Initiatives; Joan M. Twiss, MA, Executive Director, Center for Civic Partnerships

The startling new n4a report, The Maturing of America, concludes that many communities are unprepared for their quickly aging populations, with 'no where near the level of progress that has to be made to ensure that communities are livable for people of all ages'. This session provides practical, evidence-based strategies for integrated planning and implementation consistent with Smart Growth, but also specifically responsive to an aging population diverse in ethnicity, resources, health and functional status.

Meet-the-Author: Dr. Phillip M. Bromberg

Speakers: Melinda Gellman, Philip M. Bromberg, Christine C. Kieffer

Deepening his inquiry into the nature of what is therapeutic about the psychoanalytic relationship Dr. Bromberg explores the two interlocking rewards of successful treatment — healing and growth. By being an affectively alive partner who is simultaneously attentive to the dissociated impact of his own enacted participation, the analyst helps decrease the patient’s mistrust of potentially traumatizing “otherness” and its dissociated dread of attachment rupture. This in turn leads to both greater confidence in relational affect regulation and a growing ability to safely contain the self-state negotiation of otherness inherent to the experience of internal conflict. In its essence, Bromberg’s portrayal of therapeutic action restores self-state fluidity, liberating the patient’s capacity for trust without vigilance and permitting life to be lived with greater creativity, love and spontaneity.

Speakers: Kalima Rose, Director of the PolicyLink Center for Infrastructure Equity, PolicyLink; Allen Fernandez-Smith, President and CEO, Urban Habitat; Nathaniel Smith, Founder and Convener, Partnership for Southern Equity; Russ Adams, Executive Director, Alliance for Metropolitan Sustainability

Powerful regional equity coalitions and networks have formed over the last decade to unite communities of color and low-income communities across a region. These coalitions steer regional planning efforts, win and preserve affordable housing near transit, foster transit service and investments in ways that connect their communities to opportunities in the region. Regional equity leaders from Oakland, the Twin Cities, and Atlanta guide participants in how to bring together diverse organizations, define priorities and roles, and work in concert to accomplish structural changes in their communities.

(3.5 hour session) Today we are experiencing a revolution in the nature of work. Knowledge, creativity and innovation are replacing mass production as the primary driver of the economy. Generation Y, destined to be the workforce of this New Economy, gravitates to more urban places looking for housing, entertainment, recreation, jobs and the interactive environments that stimulate creative interaction, collaboration, and idea sharing. Today’s city design must emphasize the convenience, connectivity, accessibility and buzz that is central to the New Economy. Hear about what it takes to create these places. During the first part of this session, an urban planner describe planning policies that will help cities prepare for this economic engine. In the second part of this session, real estate developers and two mayors discuss how they are attracting businesses downtown and what it takes to get them there. The third part of this session features local leaders of the Kansas City startup community – entrepreneurs and a local foundation helping to make great places come to life for their own business needs

Labor Unions: Emerging Allies for Smart Growth

Speakers: Greg LeRoy, Executive Director, Good Jobs First; Kevin Pranis, Laborers International Union of North America; Aurita Apodaca, Organizer, FRESC for Good Jobs and Strong Communities; Lorena Gonzalez, Secretary/Treasurer/CEO, San Diego-Imperial Counties Central Labor Council

Some unions, like the Food & Commercial Workers who oppose Walmart and the Amalgamated Transit Union that advocates for transit, are well-known to smart growthers for their sophisticated advocacy. And unions have much more freedom to advocate than do non-profits or most public officials. But too often, labor leaders and growth-management practitioners do not know each other well or actively coordinate. This workshop is both "Labor's Self-Interest in Smart Growth" and "Labor Movement 101" with specific examples of smart growth advocacy from three exemplary labor groups and a pro-labor think tank.
