Environmental/sustainability directors who participate in the regional Heartland Sustainability Network and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network provide an overview of positive outcomes and benefits in their communities from efforts to simultaneously promote economic vitality, social equity and environmental quality.

The last several years has seen an emphasis on how using smart growth techniques can lead to economic growth. Little attention, however, has been paid to how smart growth approaches can be used for economic reinvention, particularly in smaller communities. This session focuses on how smart growth can be used as an economic development strategy, leading to economic and community revitalization. Integrating smart growth techniques and economic development is proving to be critical for communities who are successfully competition in today economy through utilizing existing assets to reinvent themselves, creating a competitive advantage, and retaining and attracting residents. Speakers represent local, state and regional level perspectives and provide ample examples.

Surprising electoral results in the United States and Britain’s Brexit vote were at least partially due to anxieties about global migration and its effect on labor markets. This program will feature nationally recognized experts who have analyzed these developing issues closely from a domestic standpoint. Panelists will discuss current trends in worksite enforcement under the Trump Administration, focusing on the updated Operating Instruction on immigration enforcement in labor disputes and the current status of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the National Labor Relations Board.
