Financing Climate Adaptation: Public-Private Cross-Pollination

Speakers: Shalini, Vajjhala, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Re:Focus Partners; Cisco DeVries, CEO, Renewable Funding; Stephanie Rico, Vice President, Environmental Affairs, Wells Fargo, Government and Community Relations; Rebecca Foster, Advisor, San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation; MODERATOR: Aleka Seville, Director, Advisory Services, Four Twenty Seven, Inc.

Financing adaptation efforts – from local community outreach to major infrastructure improvements – calls for creative sources of funding to stretch local governments’ limited budgets. This roundtable discussion focuses on innovative ways to involve the private sector in solving public problems, building on existing initiatives in energy, climate and city planning. We hear from thought leaders whose efforts straddle the public and private sectors, and discuss whether and how these different forms of public-private partnerships (PPPs) could be repurposed to help fund climate adaptation efforts at the local level.

Consequences of Blood in the Joint: Science to Clinical Practice

Speakers: Angela Forsyth, PT, DPT

Prevention of joint bleeding to protect structures such as the synovial membrane, cartilage and bone from detrimental changes is optimal, but not entirely feasible at this time. Therefore, we frequently must rely on medical and adjunct treatment administered at the time of bleeding to minimize the negative effects of blood in the joint. Advances in treatment that healthcare providers are able to offer people with hemophilia begin with basic science. In this session we discuss multiple concepts taken from scientific research that may influence future clinical practice and our ability to affect inflammation, wound healing, synovitis, cartilage and bone, and minimizing the negative effects of blood in the joint.

Public-Private Partnership to Finance and Promote Equitable TOD

Speakers: Brian Prater, Managing Director, Western Region, Low Income Investment Fund; Doug Johnson, Senior Transportation Planner, Metropolitan Transportation Commission; Lindy Hahn, Global Sustainable Finance, Morgan Stanley

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is an important component of sustainable development. Without proactive public policy and innovative financing mechanisms, the development of new public transportation infrastructures can have a negative effect upon low-income households, by driving up land and real estate values. One of the primary financing mechanisms for the creation or preservation of affordable housing near transit has been acquisition loan funds for TOD. These pioneering funds allow borrowers to hold land for five or more years, layer capital to lower interest rates from standard acquisition loans, and create an environment in which both borrowers and the lenders take new or non traditional risk in order to ensure that low-income households can benefit from combined access to reliable public transportation and affordable housing. This session highlights such a fund, The Bay Area Transit Oriented Affordable Housing Fund, and focuses on collaboration and the elements (program, policy and innovative financing tools) that need to exist to advance equitable TOD.

Scientific Paper 4: Running Head: The Translational Metaphor

Speakers: Lewis Allen Kirshner

The translational metaphor in psychoanalysis refers to the traditional method of restating or interpreting verbal and behavioral information in psychodynamic or developmental language that presumably explains presenting symptoms. The clinical phenomenology is translated by the analyst to convey its true meaning and origin. More recent concepts of symbolization and mentalization, which relate to the fundamental process of transforming unconscious contents into new forms of expression, introduce another avenue of therapeutic action. The paper presents an historical overview with clinical illustrations
