Panel IV: Teaching Freud Today

Speakers: Moderator: Jennifer Stuart, Ph.D. (New York, NY) Presenters: Sarah Ackerman, Ph.D. (Hanover, NH) Lawrence D. Blum, M.D. (Philadelphia, PA) Robert A. Paul, Ph.D. (Atlanta, GA) Jeffrey Prager, Ph.D. (Beverly Hills, CA) Michael E. Shulman, Ph.D. (Ann Arbor, MI)

This panel was proposed by Jennifer Stuart, Ph.D. Though psychoanalysis began as the creation of a single visionary, Freud’s place in education – both within our institutes and beyond – has been in dispute for years. Meanwhile, Freud’s ideas have become so deeply ingrained in our culture and practice that his influence can be overlooked. What elements of Freud’s thinking remain vital today? How might we help students of Freud to develop their own attitudes, both appreciative and critical, toward his work? Each member of this panel will teach, in real time, from an excerpt of Freud’s writing projected on screen for all to see. Panelists will demonstrate how contemporary perspectives – drawn from psychoanalysis itself, and from the humanities and social sciences – can engage both clinicians’ and non-clinicians’ interest in Freud.

Visualizing a sharing economy – a cartoon guide to the policies and practices that are paving or blocking the way

Speakers: Janelle Orsi, Author of The Sharing Solution and Director, Sustainable Economies Law Center and Law Offices of Janelle Orsi

Sharing is a key ingredient in the transition to a more sustainable world. Car sharing, shared housing, barter networks, gift circles, shared food gardens, meal sharing, community energy projects, cooperatives, community-supported enterprises – these are just some examples of ways that sharing is becoming an essential part of our economy and livelihoods. With the help of somewhat goofy cartoon slides, Janelle discusses practical ideas and tools, ways of overcoming barriers to sharing, and exciting new developments in the realm of sharing economies.

Neuroscience Symposium: Empirical Social Cognitive Neuroscience Research as a Basis for a Comprehensive Theory of Psychotherapeutic Change

Speakers: George G. Fishman, MD (Chestnut Hill, MA); Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD (New York, NY); Glen O. Gabbard, MD (Houston, TX)

This session proposes a theory of psychotherapeutic change composed of three components: (1) Exposure (aka making the unconscious conscious), (2) Restructuring of relationship representations (aka transference and interpersonal work), and (3) Co-construction of a coherent narrative (aka developing a secure attachment). Empirical data from contemporary social cognitive neuroscience, including Dr. Andrew Gerber’s data from an fMRI adaptation of Susan Andersen’s transference paradigm, are used to support this argument and to propose empirically testable hypotheses about therapeutic change and the appropriate tailoring of interventions to specific patients and situations. Some pilot data from MRI studies of therapeutic change across different types of psychotherapy are presented. All are discussed in the context of a psychoanalytic metapsychology and relevance to the relationship between psychoanalysis and empirical research.
