Scientific Paper Prize for Psychoanalytic Research: Changes of brain activation pre- post short-term psychodynamic inpatient psychotherapy: An fMRI study of panic disorder patients

Speakers: Manfred E. Beutel, MD, (Mainz, Germany); Jerald Kay, MD (Dayton, OH); Barbara Milrod, MD (New York, NY)

A number of neuro-imaging studies have shown that effective psychotherapy also affects brain function. Based on a brief review of pertinent methods and previous findings, the first functional MRI study assessing panic disorder patients before and after psychodynamic therapy are presented. The results indicate psychodynamic treatment leads to changes in fronto-limbic circuitry, similar to previous findings on cognitive-behavioral treatments. In the analyses of long-term follow-up data, evidence further shows that the change in amygdala reactivity is predictive of improvement 3 years post-treatment. Opportunities and limitations of the application of neuro-imaging technologies in psychotherapy research are discussed.

Plenary Address: Have We Changed? Psychoanalytic Education, Treatment, and Diversity in a Changing World

Speakers: Chair & Introducer: Harriet L. Wolfe, M.D., President (San Francisco, CA) Speaker: Mark Smaller, Ph.D. (Chicago, IL)

If psychoanalysis is to go forward, survive, and thrive for new generations, dramatic change in the field will be essential. Methods of educating students to practice in today’s changing world will demand innovation like never before. In an age where information, human connection and nonconnection travels in seconds, the impact on the field can no longer be denied. This presentation will review recent changes in our organization and profession, and highlight areas that demand new strategies for survival. If new and diverse students, patients, and research are to be attracted to the field, traditional perspectives must welcome innovation that will enrich psychoanalytic ideas and practice. Strategies to facilitate change will be described with direction toward implementing critical change.

A New Heart for Houston

Speakers: Robert D. Yaro, Executive Director, Regional Plan Association; Jane Thompson, Principal, Thompson Design Group; Patap Talwar, Principal, Thompson Design Group; Anne Olson, Director, Buffalo Bayou Partnership; Harry L. Dodson, Principal, Dodson Associates

Realizing the need to improve the city's quality of life, Houston's leaders decided to restore the polluted and neglected river running through the center of the city. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership, a non-profit advocacy group, was formed to implement the river restoration project. The Partnership led a wide range of citizens, advocacy groups and neighborhood representatives to develop a plan for the river's revival and its incorporation with the surrounding urban fabric. As a result, a new regional park—one of the largest landscape reclamation projects in the country—is being created as the new heart of America's 4th largest city.
