Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience Symposium: Trauma, Dream and Psychic Change in Psychoanalyses

Speakers: Co-chairs: Charles P. Fisher, M.D. (San Francisco) Richard J. Kessler, D.O. (Long Island City, NY) Presenters: Tamara Fischmann, Ph.D. (Frankfurt, Germany) Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, Ph.D. (Frankfurt, Germany)

To psychoanalysts as well as neuroscientists the neurological base of psychic functioning, particularly concerning the topic of trauma and dreaming is of special interest. In the first part of this paper neurobiological changes occurring in the course of two years of psychoanalytic psychotherapy of a severely traumatized, chronic depressed patient are traced by a recognition experiment of memories of dreams related to an underlying conflict and depicted in fMRI. In the second part a dream series of the same patient elicited partially in psychoanalytic treatment and partially in a sleep laboratory are traced for changes in a clinical and experimental psychoanalytic manner. The results of both fields of research are discussed.

Monterey Bay: Pioneering Innovative Vulnerability and Adaptation Approaches to Coastal Decision Making

Speakers: David Revell, Ph.D., Senior Coastal Geomorphologist, ESA PWA Environmental Hydrology; Philip King, Ph.D., Associate Professor, San Francisco State University; Meg Caldwell, Executive Director, Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford University; Christine Hopper, Senior Associate Planner, City of Monterey; MODERATOR: Rachel Couch, Project Manager, State Coastal Conservancy

This session explores planning efforts in Monterey Bay that comprise critical pieces in the region’s unique climate adaptation puzzle. The session includes presentations on advancements in modeling addressing local coastal hazards and applications of the results, specifically improved methods to project accelerating cliff erosion, integrate coastal erosion and flooding, and map future coastal flood hazards based on site-specific conditions; perspectives of a city planning manager on the challenges presented by coastal hazards when applying local land use policy analysis and decision-making; regulatory risk associated with land use planning adaptation strategies; and improvements to a 2012 study that evaluated economic benefits and costs of shoreline protection and land-use policies to incorporate improved data, physical modeling of hazards and socio-economic impacts under sea level rise and alternative management scenarios. These improvements will position the region’s actively engaged stakeholders to more effectively manage the dynamic land-sea interface for current and future generations.

Living in a Sustainable Community Can Lengthen Your Life!

Speakers: Dan Burden, Executive Director, Walkable and Livable Communities Institute; Joel Spoonheim, President, Spoonheim Group; Laura Jackson, Executive Vice President, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield; Kent Sovern, Iowa State Director, AARP. Moderator: Amy Levner, Manager, Livable Communities, AARP

Can a community transform itself in two years to reverse negative health outcomes, by changing city policies and budgets, restaurant menus, worksite wellness practices, schools, and even individuals’ sense of purpose and social circles? Yes! Already seven communities across the United States are implementing the Blue Zones Project by Healthways. In a matter of months, not years, thousands of citizens and leaders across all sectors get involved making healthy choices easy choices. This approach is based on the lessons of the longest living communities in the world, called Blue Zones areas. Ten well-coordinated and research-backed strategies can lead to measurable improvements in wellbeing and longevity. The recommended practices include adopting Complete Streets policies and projects, creating safe routes to schools and walking schools buses, and other efforts to change the environment. The work started in 2009 with the AARP/Blue Zones Project and now is scaling to serve communities across the U.S.

New Strategies for Equitable Smart Growth: The Promise of Place-Based “Green Zones”

Speakers: Charlie Sciammas, Community Organizer, People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights; Anita Maltbia, Executive Director, Green Impact Zone, Kansas City, MO; Carolina Martinez, Policy Advocate, Environmental Health Coalition; Penny Newman, Executive Director, Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. Moderator: Sarah Russell, Brownfields Project Manager, U.S. EPA, Region 9.

How can smart growth braid together economic development and equity with a strong foundation in land-use planning into one cohesive movement? We explore this question from the bottom-up: from the perspective of organizations that are combining sustainable land-use planning and smart-growth principles with economic development, all within the framework of equity. The panel lookS at four place-based initiatives that are transitioning areas of high poverty, pollution and poor land-use planning into thriving communities with sustainable housing, transit and economic development. The models are examples of how communities across the country are using place-based models to address persistent issues of poor land-use planning, environmental burdens and lack of economic opportunity. The panelists will discuss how diverse groups can work together to achieve neighborhood-level change on issues of economic development, equity, and sustainable planning.

Panel IV: Mourning, Identity, Creativity

Speakers: Adele Tutter, Otto F. Kernberg, Anna Ornstein, Leon Wurmser, Jeanine M. Vivona, Tehela Nimroody

Having come a long way from Freud’s circumscribed process of libidinal detachment, mourning is now considered a potentially life-long process that includes not only the grieving of loved ones, but also the grieving of developmental stages (e.g., childhood) and components of identity (e.g., ideals and illusions). At the same time, mourning is increasingly appreciated as a powerful inaugurator of personal growth and creative and vocational productivity. This panel brings together leading thinkers who have made important recent contributions to this topic. Through interactive dialogue with the discussant and the audience, they attempt a fresh synthesis of the complex, universal, and transformative processes of mourning. This panel was originally proposed by Adele Tutter, M.D., Ph.D.
