Comprehensive Planning in the 21st Century: Planning For Health & Sustainability

Speakers: Beth Altshuler, Urban Planning and Health Specialist, Raimi + Associates; Carlos Gallinar, Deputy Director for City Development and Planning, City of El Paso, TX; Michael Kelly, Senior Program Officer, Paso del Norte Health Foundation. Moderator: Anna Ricklin, Manager, American Planning Association.

(2 hour session) Active transportation, food access, social cohesion… These buzz words represent important issues for community health, but how do they become part of a real place? One of the most critical places to start is comprehensive planning. This session describes the role of the comprehensive plan and ways to integrate health at this level. National trends for including health in planning is covered through an overview of how well comprehensive plans currently address health across the country. A local example will come from El Paso, TX, one of the first major cities in the U.S. to include a stand-alone health element in its plan. Using Plan El Paso as a model, participants will learn about opportunities to advance community discussion and policies that link the built environment to physical and mental wellbeing.

Localization movement – the economic argument for keeping it local

Speakers: Linda Currie, Transition Berkeley; Susan Silber, Buy Local Berkeley; Carolina Miranda, Sustainable Business Alliance; Erin Kilmer-Neel, Oakland Grown; Hut Landon, SF Locally Owned Merchants Association

There are numerous studies demonstrating how “buy local” campaigns benefit communities; how support of local retailers, producers, and manufacturers benefits city and citizen wealth; how moving your money to community banks and credit unions better serves entrepreneurs and residents; how it’s friendlier to the planet to source locally; how nonprofits receive more funding from locally-based business; and how promoting local entrepreneurs and business owners verses out-of-town owned chains promotes diversity and healthy, resilient communities. Learn the economics behind the localization movement and how you can personally participate in shifting dollars locally.

Effective Social Work Strategies for Engaging the African-American Male

Speakers: Waldo E. Johnson Jr., PhD, MSW; Moderator: Debra Honig, MSW, LCSW

This session focuses on the role and importance of historical and contemporary social statuses that shape medical and public health professional individual and institutional practices with African-American males. We explore how these racialized and social class experiences, coupled with American male cultural notions and experiences with public and private social welfare and social service institutions as both patients and clients, frame the context for examining African-American male marginalized engagement and their subsequent distrust/mistrust of the medical and public health professions. In addition, the presentation focuses on how male help-seeking behavior and culture within the disproportionately impoverished African-American community influence engagement with social welfare and social service institutions.
