(2 hour session) Active transportation, food access, social cohesion… These buzz words represent important issues for community health, but how do they become part of a real place? One of the most critical places to start is comprehensive planning. This session describes the role of the comprehensive plan and ways to integrate health at this level. National trends for including health in planning is covered through an overview of how well comprehensive plans currently address health across the country. A local example will come from El Paso, TX, one of the first major cities in the U.S. to include a stand-alone health element in its plan. Using Plan El Paso as a model, participants will learn about opportunities to advance community discussion and policies that link the built environment to physical and mental wellbeing. | | MP3 | | $20.00 | | $20.00

Johnson Jr., PhD, MSW; Moderator: Debra Honig, MSW, LCSW This session focuses on the role and importance of historical and contemporary social statuses that shape medical and public health professional individual and institutional practices with African-American males. We explore how these racialized and social class experiences, coupled with American male cultural notions and experiences with public and private social welfare and social service institutions as both patients and clients, frame the context for examining African-American male marginalized engagement and their subsequent distrust/mistrust of the medical and public health professions. In addition, the presentation focuses on how male help-seeking behavior and culture within the disproportionately impoverished African-American community influence engagement with social welfare and social service institutions. | | MP3 | | $20.00 | | $20.00

Robert A. Paul, Ph.D. (Atlanta, GA)
Jeffrey Prager, Ph.D. (Beverly Hills, CA)
Michael E. Shulman, Ph.D. (Ann Arbor, MI)
This panel was proposed by Jennifer Stuart, Ph.D. Though psychoanalysis began as the creation of a single visionary, Freud’s place in education – both within our institutes and beyond – has been in dispute for years. Meanwhile, Freud’s ideas have become so deeply ingrained in our culture and practice that his influence can be overlooked. What elements of Freud’s thinking remain vital today? How might we help students of Freud to develop their own attitudes, both appreciative and critical, toward his work? Each member of this panel will teach, in real time, from an excerpt of Freud’s writing projected on screen for all to see. Panelists will demonstrate how contemporary perspectives – drawn from psychoanalysis itself, and from the humanities and social sciences – can engage both clinicians’ and non-clinicians’ interest in Freud. | | MP3 | | $30.00 | | $30.00
