Plenary Address: (Re)-Membering The Female Body in Psychoanalysis

Speakers: Rosemary Balsam

It would seem that psychoanalysts could never overlook patients’ bodies, given the major role that males, females and sexuality played in Freud’s theories. Yet the body has fallen from grace in our fi eld nowadays. To focus this topic, Dr. Rosemary Balsam will discuss the impact of procreativity and the major accomplishment of the female body, childbirth, as utterly common, but yet the least psychoanalytically attended source of both positive and negative experiences that can shift body image and even gender portraiture. Old theory mainly fl ed it. Newer theories, by focusing too exclusively on the mind while largely ignoring the body, risk a similar female erasure.

Comparing Coastal Responses to Promote Regional Resiliency

Speakers: Tina Shumate, Senior Technical Recruiter, Recruiting Manager, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources; Nicola Hedge, Climate Initiative Manager, The San Diego Foundation; Linda Giannelli Pratt, Chief Program Manager, Environmental Services, City of San Diego, CA

Hurricane Katrina's destruction along the Gulf Coast has required communities to rebuild from scratch, rethinking urban patterns and long-range planning. Today, new master plans across the Mississippi Gulf Coast aim to curb sprawl and rebuild compact communities with green infrastructure to manage storm water and mitigate flooding in low-lying areas. On another coast, San Diego County residents need only recall the recent multi-year drought and devastating wildfires to recognize climate change impacts bearing down on the US southwest. The region, however, is emerging as an incubator for innovative development of plans to mitigate and adapt to our changing climate, with philanthropy playing a catalytic role and local governments like the City of San Diego leading by example. Join this discussion comparing and contrasting approaches of two coastal regions to advance smart growth and promote regional climate resiliency.

Plenary Address: Core Issues in the Treatment of Personality Disordered Patients

Speakers: George G. Fishman, MD (Chestnut Hill, MA); Dan H. Buie, MD (Wellesley Hills, MA); Robert Lindsay Pyles, MD, President-Elect (Wellesley Hills, MA)

Neurotic patients possess the capacities required for maintaining their basic self-stability. Personality disordered patients do not. They continuously need to depend on others to provide them with the capacities they need in order to maintain basic self-stability. Clinical experience and relevant literature indicate that these capacities are five in number. They concern self-realness, self-holding so as not to experience aloneness, self-worth, self-love, and identity. This presentation focuses on understanding the consequences of deficits of these capacities along with treatments that can enable patients to develop these capacities for themselves.

PPRS Research Forum: Treatment Notes: Objective Measures of Language Style Point to Clinical Insights

Speakers: Leon Hoffman, Jane Algus, William Braun, Wilma Bucci, Bernard Maskit, John Porcerelli

This session presents the systematic evaluation of the language of treatment notes written by psychoanalytic candidates for fourteen analyses carried out under supervision at the NY Psychoanalytic Institute. The notes were analyzed using computerized measures of the referential process developed by Bucci and Maskit. This session explores how linguistic measures mirror the clinical course, comparing one successful with one unsuccessful case. The measures point to nodal periods in the analytic work, which were clinically examined to ascertain why one case progressed, with a successful termination, while the other did not, ending with a forced interruption by the analyst.
