Candidates’ Council Master Teacher Award
Speakers: Chair: Valerie Golden, J.D., Ph.D. (Minneapolis, MN) Award Recipient & Discussant: Anton O. Kris, M.D. (Cambridge, MA) "LOVE’S NOT TIME’S FOOL: SOME CONTINUITIES, DISCONTINUITIES, AND ALTERATIONS IN PSYCHOANALYSIS DURING MY LIFETIME "
Anton O. Kris, M.D., renowned Psychiatrist, Professor, Training and Supervising Analyst, and author, is the 2017 recipient of the Candidates Council Master Teacher Award. Drawing on clinical examples, Dr. Kris will identify: 1) continuities in psychoanalysis that have endured from the mid- 1930s to the present (for example, the recognition of unconscious mental processes, the use of free association, and the importance of unconscious conflict); 2) discontinuities in psychoanalysis, features that have undergone significant modifications since the 1930s (for example, the full development of the structural point of view, the elaboration of pre-oedipal development; and female development and sexual preferences); and 3) radical alterations in psychoanalysis since the 1930s (for example, the recognition of the analyst’s subjectivity, the revised understanding of countertransference, and the analyst’s participatory role in the analytic process).

What would successful adaptation to climate change look like? This question has no simple answer. Despite high-level commitments to prepare for and manage the impacts of climate change, it remains difficult to move beyond adaptation planning and in fact decide on a particular course of action, to garner the necessary political and social support in budget-constrained times, and to implement concrete adaptation measures. At the same time, many sectors and communities already face difficult choices and trade-offs as climate change impacts unfold with growing speed and fury and as adopting either more stringent or novel strategies to strengthen and retain resilience produces winners and losers. This session provides a framework for thinking about adaptation success and then invites panelists from various climate-sensitive sectors, different parts of the state, levels of government and perspectives to discuss how they do or don’t address the question of success and how to measure it.

Born in a Small Town: Transportation Success Stories from Rural America
Speakers: Sarah Kline, Policy Director, Reconnecting America; Terry Supahan, President, Supuhan Consulting Group; Lisa Ballard, PE, President, Current Transportation Solutions. Moderator: Roger Millar, PE, AICP, Vice President, Smart Growth America
When you hear the words “public transportation,” what image comes to mind? For many Americans, the words conjure up pictures of crowded subway cars and diesel buses crawling through traffic – in short, scenes of urban mass transit. Small city and rural America has public transportation needs that are just as compelling as those in big cities. Aging populations, young people, disabled citizens, working families and other people who want transportation choices are working together as never before to make public transportation happen. Federal and state government resources have become available for small-town and rural transit, and communities are leveraging this investment to great success. Panelists discuss small city and rural transit success stories from around the country, with an emphasis on why and how success happened so that the lessons learned can be applied in other communities.
