Prize Winner: Christine Maksimowicz, Ph.D. (Amherst MA)
Title: “Poverty, Parenting, and the Foreclosure of Ordinary Devotion: Rethinking Winnicott Socioanalytically”
This annual prize is awarded for essays on psychoanalytically informed research in the biobehavioral sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. The Undergraduate Essay Prize and Courage to Dream Book Prize will also be awarded during this session. In this paper, Dr. Maksimowicz applies the fiction of Toni Morrison and sociologic research into effects of social class and poverty on the developmental process of maternal recognition. She proposes a complex understanding of how economic necessity, pragmatic imperatives, and a desire for respectability shape a style of caregiving that prioritizes “doing” over “being” and can inhibit the development of a child’s unique subjectivity. | | MP3 | | $20.00 | | $20.00 | |
