This Roundtable is the second of a two-part presentation by APsaA member Keith Kanner of San Diego. Dr. Kanner is the author of the recently published “Your Family Matters”. He is also a child &adult analyst in private practice, as well as a regular contributor for the local FOX TV affiliate, wherehe provides parenting advice and answers viewers’ questions on adolescent development. Dr.Kanner leads participants in the finer points of discussing current events through a psychoanalytic lens when interacting with the media, or writing opinion pieces for mainstream news publications. For this session, discusses how his involvement on TV and radio, his books and participation with a national non-profit organization have helped increase awareness both for his private practice and for psychoanalysis in the San Diego area. Dr. Kanner and the co-chairs of the workshop also coach participants on how to think of newsworthy ‘pitches’ that win over journalists and help attract positive coverage of psychoanalytic topics and programs.

The black nanny caring for white babies in oppressive, racist contexts was a common occurrence in our culture up to the civil rights era. The psychodynamics of the black nanny’s impact on the identities of the whites reared in those circumstances are considered. The modern extensions of that history is manifest in nannies/au pairs of color from the Caribbean and Africa, and whites from Europe in their rearing of children in both Black and White families. Clinical data to illuminate psychodynamics of power, sexuality, defenses, and identity formation played out in these modern day expressions are presented. Implications for other relationships in our society with obvious power differentials that may or may not involve differences in color (e.g., the bank teller in relation to his/her employer and/or customer) are discussed.

Scientific Paper Prize for Psychoanalytic Research: Changes of brain activation pre- post short-term psychodynamic inpatient psychotherapy: An fMRI study of panic disorder patients

A number of neuro-imaging studies have shown that effective psychotherapy also affects brain function. Based on a brief review of pertinent methods and previous findings, the first functional MRI study assessing panic disorder patients before and after psychodynamic therapy are presented. The results indicate psychodynamic treatment leads to changes in fronto-limbic circuitry, similar to previous findings on cognitive-behavioral treatments. In the analyses of long-term follow-up data, evidence further shows that the change in amygdala reactivity is predictive of improvement 3 years post-treatment. Opportunities and limitations of the application of neuro-imaging technologies in psychotherapy research are discussed.

The panelists will discuss how diverse groups can work together to achieve neighborhood-level change on issues of economic development, equity, and sustainable planning.

The plenary address focuses on the narcissistic vulnerability of the psychoanalyst that is inherent in the practice of psychoanalysis. Using case vignettes, Dr. Chused details the problems presented by the analyst’s vulnerability to psychic injury as well as by the potential for grandiose self-representation and expectations. During the presentation several recommendations are developed as to how the analyst’s inevitable vulnerability to narcissistic injury and grandiose thinking can be used to further the course of an analysis.

In this paper, the concept of an ethics specific to psychoanalysis are explored through a critical reading of Lacan’s seminar, The Ethics of Psychoanalysis. While it must obviously address moral concerns, a psychoanalytic ethics should also embody a unique perspective on human nature growing out of analytic experience and knowledge. In particular, the analyst’s desire is always in play in his attempt to sustain an ethical position. An examination of Lacan’s seminar highlights this link, but also points to a number of unresolved problems.

The federal government has, through a series of public laws, executive orders and presidential memorandums, set out an ambitious mandated program to address energy/water/waste/greenhouse gas reduction, a reduced dependence on fossil fuel, and increased usage in alternative fuels for federal agencies. The panelists from the Defense Distribution Center-Susquehanna and HDR share their experiences in accomplishing the mandates while integrating sustainability and net-zero energy planning at a Defense Logistics Agency installation over the past year. Sustainability topics discussed include sustainability components, component support activities, and a capital investment strategy and implementation plan. Net Zero Energy topics include energy reduction measures, “right-sizing” the GSA fleet using combinatorial optimization, recommending grid/islanded-connected micro-grid architecture/control, providing the resulting renewable energy solution, discussing feasible funding mechanisms, and incorporating all aspects of Net Zero into an implementation plan.

(2 hour session) Just six years ago, Missouri had only three Complete Streets policies. Now the state has more than 20 Complete Streets policies at the local, regional and statewide level, and has been identified as one of the leaders in the nationwide Complete Streets movement. All six of the state’s six largest cities have now adopted Complete Streets policies; citywide Complete Streets policies cover over 1.4 million of the state’s residents. At the metropolitan planning organization level, Complete Streets policies cover more than half of the state’s residents. How were these policies created and adopted? What were the strategies used by advocacy groups, agencies and local citizens? What challenges did they face in creating and adopting policies? How did they overcome the objections? How successful have the policies been? What challenges are advocates, citizens and agencies facing now? Get a take-home list of strategies, ideas and examples.
